The voice test we run before we accept a manuscript
The fear is reasonable. You have watched talented experts sign with publishers or hire ghostwriters and receive a finished book that sounds like a press release. The sentences are clean. The cadence is corporate. The person you met at the conference is nowhere in the pages. You want to know whether that happens here.
It does not. Here is how we prevent it.
What the test actually measures
Every applicant who reaches Step 2 of the process runs a Voice Diagnostic before we approve a single chapter. The diagnostic is not a style quiz. It is a writing session. You respond to a structured set of prompts in your own words, on your own time, without editorial coaching. We read what comes back.
We are looking for three things. First, we want to hear a consistent sentence rhythm across your responses. Not pretty sentences. Consistent ones. A person who writes the same way tired as they do energized has a locked voice. A person who sounds like three different columnists across five prompts does not, yet.
Second, we look for specificity. Generic answers fail this test on the first read. If you write about clients, we want to see a real client with a real situation. Names change for privacy. The situation does not.
Third, we look for the opinions. An expert who hedges every claim in the diagnostic will hedge every claim in the manuscript. Readers put hedging books down at chapter four. Know your position. State it plainly.
What happens when the diagnostic comes back strong
The editorial team documents your voice markers: sentence length, preferred conjunctions, how you handle transitions, what you do when a point lands. Those markers go into a locked voice file that travels with your manuscript from Step 2 through Step 11. Every editor on your project reads that file before they touch a paragraph.
Your in-app coach trains on the same file. It flags the moment your draft drifts from the documented patterns. You fix it before it compounds.
What happens when the diagnostic needs work
We send specific notes. Not "write more conversationally." Notes like: this answer runs seven passive constructions in six sentences. Here is the same passage rewritten in your voice. Now do the next one yourself.
Some authors resubmit once and pass. Some take three rounds. The gate is not a judgment on your expertise. It is a proof that the book will sound like you from page one to page three hundred.
That proof is the only thing we cannot build for you. Everything else, we build together.
